While I was an employee at the University of Kentucky Center for Visualization and Virtual Environments, I had the opportunity to work with bleeding edge display and visualization research. One such research area involved using structured light to make huge, immersive environments by blending the output of multiple projectors into a single, unified display. In these High Def and low footprint displays, we had a solution to a number of problems not yet known to us. SCRIBE Entertainment was later formed as a means to explore those problems and turn the displays into a product/service to be used by others.
In the Spring of 2011, the screens made their first debut on stage at the University of Kentucky Opera/Theater production of Porgy and Bess under direction by the UK College of Engineering.
54 projects came together in a feat of several engineering disciplines to create a truly stunning visual experience. With top-notch graphic design work by Aaron Camenisch and scenic design/direction by Richard Kagey, the screens and art helped immerse the audience in 1920s Charleston without overshadowing the beauty of the opera itself.
After the UK production, the College of Engineering partnered with the Atlanta Opera to bring the displays the Atlanta for their own production of Porgy and Bess. There was a lot of press surrounding the UK and Atlanta Opera partnership and the use of a brand new technology on the stage.
After these initial debuts, SCRIBE took over managing the use of the displays for theater and stage productions. SCRIBE, LLC deployed the screens in the Spring of 2012 for a production of Falstaff, also held at the Cobb Energy Center in Atlanta, GA.
